The residency offers artists, designers and makers a space to step away from their everyday environment, focus on the development of a personal creative project and engage with traditional techniques through direct contact with artisans, materials and processes.
At the core of the programme is the idea of learning through making. Participants are encouraged to work with their hands, experiment with natural materials and explore techniques that have been transmitted through generations. By bringing this knowledge into dialogue with contemporary art and design, the residency seeks not only to preserve traditional practices but also to reinterpret them and open them to new forms of creative expression.
Rainbow Art Residencies welcomes interdisciplinary practices, recognising that contemporary artistic research can emerge through many different media and forms of knowledge. The programme creates opportunities for exchange between artists, craftspeople, designers and cultural practitioners from different backgrounds and countries.
ART, CRAFT & MATERIAL KNOWLEDGE
The residency programme explores a wide range of artistic and craft practices, including:

CO-CREATING WITH NATURE
Working directly with clay, stone, fibres, metals and other materials creates a close relationship between artistic practice and the natural environment.
Rainbow Art Residencies understands making as a process of co-creation with nature: materials are not treated simply as passive resources, but as active participants in the creative process. Through experimentation and direct engagement with traditional craft techniques, residents can explore new relationships between material, landscape, culture and artistic expression.
This approach also encourages reflection on sustainability, local resources and the value of preserving forms of knowledge that are increasingly disappearing from contemporary production systems.
ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE
The programme brings together practitioners from different artistic disciplines, allowing each resident to develop an individual project while participating in a wider environment of exchange and experimentation.
Previous residents have included painters, photographers, visual and performance artists, jewellery designers and other creative practitioners. Their projects have explored themes ranging from rural memory and female narratives to photography, symbolism, natural materials, traditional design and relationships between body, landscape and imagination.
Residencies may also provide access to workshops, specialised craft processes and guidance from artists, curators and experienced artisans, creating opportunities to integrate new techniques directly into each participant’s own practice.
CULTURAL EXCHANGE & CONTEMPORARY PRACTICE
